FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A sliding window has one or more sashes that slide horizontally past a fixed pane within the same frame. The sash runs on rollers in a track at the sill, so nothing swings into or out of the room, and the window can be left partly open without projecting anywhere.

On a standard two panel sliding window, one sash slides and the other is fixed, so about half the opening clears. Three panel configurations have a fixed centre pane with a sliding sash at each end, which opens two thirds while keeping the largest pane of glass in the middle.

Because nothing protrudes when the window is open. An awning or casement sash swings outward, which is a problem above a kitchen bench, beside a walkway or over a path. A sliding sash stays within the frame, so the window can be opened fully in a tight space.

A sliding sash seals against brush or wool pile seals rather than compressing against the frame, so a slider is generally less airtight than an awning or casement window. Double glazing improves thermal performance and reduces noise, though on a slider the seal type matters as much as the glazing.

Sometimes. Where a bedroom window sits more than two metres above the surface below and the sill is low, the National Construction Code requires the opening to be restricted or screened to prevent falls. Restrictors can be fitted to a sliding sash. Confirm the requirement with your building surveyor.

On the outside, in a separate track. Because the sash slides within the frame rather than swinging outward, the flyscreen sits outboard of the sliding sash and covers the opening half of the window. It stays in place whether the window is open or closed.
